I went to my local driving range last Saturday and noticed someone nearby who looked familiar. Turns out I was right, it was Allison Stokke, one of the best pole vaulters ever! I watched her and her family hitting balls, and they were all really good, especially her husband. That dude was locked in.

I hit next to Bill Braskey the other day. He was striping his gap wedge 260 yards one handed.
Darius Rucker played a couple holes ahead of us today. He’s playing a show in my city tonight so it was cool to see him on the range briefly and on the putting green warming up. I’m not a mega fan so didn’t feel like bothering him, but he had a pure swing!
I knew it was him because he had his name on his bag – in case anyone was curious! Did some googling after and found out he’s the PGA ambassador for golf this year! I didn’t even know he played

I know this is a fun post but I’m going to take a moment to share a story that very few in my life appreciate.
I was playing Sandpiper in Santa Barbara. At the time, probably playing at 15 HC. Fine, it was fun. But during the round we kept hearing some mild singing and cheering and kept looking back to see two massive humans with bright pink and orange golf shoes behind us. Shortly after we made the turn, we spoke to a marshall or whatever who was driving around checking pace and whatnot, and we asked him if he knew who was behind us. Guy says it’s D Wade and his son Zaire. Now the size and shoes make sense lol.
Hole 18 (several years ago, tees have moved) was a long 185ish par 3 straight at the clubhouse. I hit last in my group and hit a 5 iron to about 4 inches. I lost my fucking mind. To this day, closest I’ve been to a HIO. Best part though was D Wade sitting behind us, just rolled up, and yells “holy shit this dude almost made it!” My golf game peaked that day. We stopped for lunch on the way to Topgolf and sitting a couple of tables away was Laura Davies. We didn’t invite her to Topgolf.
Actually walked up to Mookie Betts at a local SoCal muni range. It’s the only muni that has a grass range. This was after the dodgers won the series last year. He was unrecognizable, standing about 5’9 ish 170 soaking wet. Said congrats, let’s run it back and let him continue his range sesh.
Ed Belfour used to be a member at my club. I actually played with him a couple of times. Had some crazy stories.
Ran into Oscar De La Hoya and Holly Sonders at Pebble, they were a few tee times ahead of us and we rode on the same shuttle to the driving range. We also found a bag of coke in a sand trap on #9. Coincidence? I think not.

Grant Fuhr played the men’s open at my home course when I was a kid. I was about 13, I got him to sign this book I had and he said it was the first time he ever signed the photo of him that was in the book. Dude was so nice and such a good swing.

Some years ago, I had the privilege of playing a very private course on the same day that Larry Fitzgerald (the AZ Cardinals wide receiver) played it. They had many, many absurdly wealthy dudes come through all the time (construction, hedge funds, money managers, etc), but none that I ever gave a shit about. But Larry… that’s a dude I give a shit about.
I had to shake his hand and tell him how much I loved his football game, and so I did when we passed one another in the clubhouse after our rounds. The only things I really remember was how genuinely nice he was and how fucking massive his hands were. Just… indescribably huge. Twice the size of mine, and I’m not a little dude.
I offered to buy him a cocktail and he very politely declined. By all accounts, he was a supreme gentleman and a very, very good golfer.
I once got lapped by a single walking the course – when he came up on us it turned out it was Jerry Rice. It was about 9:30 am and he was on his 20-somethingth hole. He said he walks 36 and finishes before 11am every day.
I’ve run into Romano playing mini golf, his family apparently goes on vacation to the same beach town that mine does. I worked a summer at a nice course and got to meet a few recognizable people. The main two that come to mind from that was Roger Clemons and Booker T.
